I shall now be posting at anarkissed.livejournal.com instead. I just discovered that I still had that account registered and for some reason it feels more 'right' posting under the alias I created years ago, instead of a moniker based on my favourite band. I'm not entirely sure why I forgot about that old account.

Hrumph! I woke up this morning, but was so tired that I fell asleep again after eating some lunch. Woke up at about 5:30. It's annoying - I always wake up feeling depressed and it takes hours before I can get over it and start work. Maybe my serotonin goes on strike just before I wake up or something.

There's this ridiulously friendly girl at uni who I only see on rare occasions. She's even listened to a bit of Opeth, which I found out after she commented on my t-shirt. Red highlights in her hair and lots of piercings. She's gorgeous and she makes me nervous! She has fiancé!

Honestly, what really annoys me is that he's probably an awesome guy, because I can't imagine a girl like her deciding to marry someone any less than that.

Ah, plenty of fish in the sea. If I can find a girl like that in such a tiny uni as Berwick, then there's surely a few more around Melbourne. I WILL FIND YOU AND HUNT YOU DOWN with my pokey stick of eternal happy love.

Belive it or not, there's going to be a Terminator series. Well, sort of. It's called the Sarah Conner Chronicles and is set between the second and third movies. Sarah Conner is played by Lena Headey - best known as the queen from 300. As you'd probably expect, John Conner is also played by someone else - Thomas Dekker, aka Zach from Heroes. You know, the cheerleader's guy friend. As you'd expect, the T-800 will not be played by Arnie. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a [edit: wtf, i forgot to finish this sentence. I really must have been quite tired when I wrote this! I think I meant to say, 'I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a new Terminator model or a they've simply replaced him with that new guy']

What really tops it off is Summer Glau (River Tam from Firefly/Serenity) playing - wait for it - a Terminator sent back in time to protect John in high school. A female Terminator in high school! Wait 'til you hear what she says in this trailer:

[Edit: Well, the video has been taken down. What Summer says is the infamous 'come with me if you want to live' line. I really can't believe they made her say it! It doesn't fit her voice at all. Thanks to [info]shraka27 for the notification.]

The effects are done by Zoic Studios (Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Spiderman 2) so at least we know they'll be good. Nonetheless, I really can't see this series going more than a couple of episodes! Maybe a season, if we're lucky. Someone on YouTube commented "This should be on the Sci-Fi channel and not Fox. If its on Sci-Fi ithas more of a chance of not being cancelled after 3 episodes." - which is damn spot on. I would imagine that if it were put on Sci-Fi, it'd last maybe one or two more episodes than that. Keke.

Worth noting is that even though it's apparently set before T3, it's most likely non-canon. In T3, John Conner was under the impression that judgement day had been stopped during the events of T2, so having Terminators appear somewhere in the middle doesn't seem to make any sense. This series would probably best be viewed standalone, much like Smallville does not make sense in most Superman continuities. Clark Kent is supposed to wear glasses! Eh, maybe everyone in Metropolis receives a brain wipe.

Akercocke again [May. 21st, 2007|06:39 am]
Haha, fuck, I really should be sleeping. But anyways.

Non-Akerocke fans may not find this that interesting, but I always find arguments between Christianity and other religions/non-religions like Satanism and Atheism amusing.

Akercocke played in Belfast, Ireland for the second time and were, more or less inevitably, met with harsh criticism from the Christian community due to their Satanic beliefs and imagery. They were invited to appear on the Nolan Show for a discussion. It really is hard to tell how much of Akercocke's image is based on actual belief and how much of it is used for shock factor, although they do claim that "organised Satanism is as bad as any other monotheic religion".

Their latest album has actually been growing on me a bit more, as I notice little unique riffs here and there.

I'd say more but I must rush myself off to bed - there's loads of work to do in the next few days and I've stayed up way too long. I can hear the garbage truck tumbling down the streets and that sound is depressing.

Whoa. [May. 18th, 2007|02:21 am]
[music |Candlemass - Samarithan]

I decided to check Opeth.com for news and found out that Peter Lindgren just left Opeth =/ I honestly didn't see this coming!

Peter Lindgren has stepped down from his guitar wielding duties after 16 years in Opeth. Below is an open letter from Peter addressing the issue:

"It is with sadness I announce that Opeth and I are going separate ways after almost 16 years. The decision has been the toughest I've ever made but it is the right one to make at this point in my life.

The reason behind this is that I feel that I simply have lost some of the enthusiasm and inspiration needed to participate in a band that has grown from a few guys playing the music we love to a world-wide industry. The love of music has always been, and still is, our motive, but I personally have lost something along the way. The massive amount of touring has taken its toll. Opeth has worked extremely hard to get where we are right now and in order to persist and maintain the quality of the music, it is necessary that we continue to work hard and always stay focused. But in doing so, it means that we nowadays spend 18 or 19 months on the road and I don't feel the same enthusiasm for the upcoming world tour that I have felt earlier. I have come to a point where I realize I won't be able to give the band 100%, and from both sides this will not be good enough for what Opeth stands for. I will always love playing, listening to, and living music, but I will do it differently from now on.

These years has easily been the best of my life and I will always cherish the memory of what we have experienced together. I would like to thank the band, our management, record label people, all the bands I've made friends with for everything. Most of all, I would like to thank the fans from the depth of my heart for the support throughout the years.

I wish Mikael, Martin, Per and Axe all the best and I am confident they will continue doing the greatest music in the world!! /Peter"

They've also already found a replacement guitarist:

Fredrik Åkesson has been confirmed as being the new guitarist in Opeth. Visit his MySpace at: www.myspace.com/kfredrikakesson

Says Mikael Åkerfeldt: "Well, I think it's too soon right now to fully be able to explain what I feel. Peter and I had been working in this band together for almost half of our lives and we shared some unforgettable experiences together all over the world. We will obviously remain friends and this "break up" has been on very good terms from both sides. We all wish him the best of luck with his future ventures!

Fredrik was the only name that popped up thinking about a replacement for Peter. In my opinion he's one of the top 3 guitar players out of Sweden. We all get along great as we've known each other for maybe 4 years + he already has the experience to take on the circus-like lifestyle we lead as members of Opeth.

I can't wait to see what he can bring to the table musically and also to get out on the roads touring together. His first gig will be at the Ilosaari festival in Finland. I'm sure he'll shit his pants before that one, but then again...so will I!"

He's one weird lookin' dude.

You'd swear he just came out of a Chris Cunningham video clip:

Or maybe The Knife's Silent Shout.

Apart from Mikael, the only person left in the band since Blackwater Park is Martin Mendez! I hope he doesn't crack and leave too (though I seriously woudln't be surprised at all). Regardless, I know Opeth will always be Opeth as long as Mikael is in the band - considering that he basically writes all the songs and is the only member who's been there since their first album, Orchid. Either way it will no doubt be strange seeing them live without Peter holding one leg up on the fallback monitors.

[music |Isis]

Grrrr. My interwebs speed is capped! Bigpond is so devious - they changed the current plan I have from a 10gb limit to 12gb, but we're forced to change it manually. So I did that, and the site tells me the plan will be changed overnight. I, thinking I'd be uncapped the next day, was content. But, as you can imagine, my speed remained capped. I called them up just now and due to some billing...pro rata...complicated...thingy-that-I-do-not-understand, apparently I won't receive the extra 2gb until June 11! Bastards.

Bigpond prices could be so much better, except we hardly have any choice when it comes to the availability of high speed internet in my area. Optus Cable has far better rates (faster speeds, off-peak downloads, larger limit; especially on the rewards plans) but don't have any service here - you'd think they would, especially in the suburb I live in (no, not Toorak, but close enough). There are also no ADSL2+ exchanges for any companies. Again, I would have thought otherwise; though apparently iiNet are installing an exchange.

A mate of mine told me that Bigpond's prices are higher due to anti-competition something-or-other. Bleh.

Aching Cocky [May. 14th, 2007|05:34 am]
[mood | curious]
[music |Akercocke - The Dark Inside]

Not many of my friends listen to them, but here's a review I felt like writing anyway...

I've been listening to the new Akercocke album, Antichrist, a decent bit the last few days. Before listening, I had a small laugh to myself about the album title; which I find hilariously, stereotypically metal and also very typical of the band themselves.

The first track - Black Messiah - serves as an intro; electronic static and demonic ramblings leading onto the first real song, entitled - wait for it - 'Summon the Antichrist'. When this track kicked in, I was immediately caught off guard by how 'dampened' the production is in comparison to their previous album (Words That Go Undone, Deeds That Go Unspoken). The guitars are not as bright and the drums are pushed a bit further into the background. Almost everything, including the vocals, sound arguably muddier. That said, maybe partially due to these elements having less presence, the bass can be heard a lot more easily. Overall, it's hard for me to say if I like the production of the album, but it has grown on me.

The next track is Axiom, which kicks off with a (12-string?) acoustic guitar interjected with Gray's seemingly robotic drumming; blastbeats and doublekick. It's an interesting feel that seems to be an integral part of their sound nowadays. That is, parts of the album which are otherwise played with clean or lightly distorted guitars still feature heavy use of the drums.

Akercocke appears to have chosen to slightly strip back their prog influence in favour of their darker black and death metal elements found on their first few albums. Some fans view this as a regression on their sound. It would be easy to assume that more prog would be the next logical step when continuing on from Words and so I can imagine why many people would be confused by this decision. In a way, I'm almost convinced that it was a conscious decision by the band to head in this direction instead of predictably exaggerating their prog sound.

They do, however, still maintain strong dynamic between heavy and soft parts; as well as that certain primal feel that matches with their overtly Satanic disposition. One track that really caught my attention was 'The Dark Inside', which begins with their more traditional death metal sound that soon changes into clean sung passage. This flows into a passage that I never expected - electronic, melodic drones and fast-paced off-beat drums, largely reminiscent of drum 'n bass! Despite the dramatic change in instrumentation, it fits perfectly - you know, like how the bagpipe solo really fits into Under the Milky Way. Heh, sorry. Completely different styles, but it was the best example I could think of. (On a slight digression, apparently the bagpipe solo isn't actually a bagpipe - it's an e-bow on a the guitar)

Alright, now for my overall impression. I don't think Antichrist has the lastability of 'Words...' (which I view as a brilliant effort), although it is a lot more interesting than any of their albums before it, placing it in happy second place. The change in production can be easily adjusted to as the album progresses. Even though the album doesn't push the sound of their previous album, I still view it as a progression; just not in the direction that we would have expected. As you can probably judge from what I've written, the album is largely hit, but still a sizeable proportion of miss. The songs on Antichrist, despite some very interesting parts, are not as engaging as the could be. As such, Antichrist is still a solid album, but not quite as polished as it could be.

Whew! Yet another disjointed review written before I pass out in bed. Sorry about that.

Rose Tyler in Doctor Who suddenly received a new phone, which happens to be the same model as mine. However, due to the laws of science fiction, it has far more advanced features than mine; such as receiving high quality video and interfacing with Cybermen. Yay! Mostly pointless information! [May. 13th, 2007|03:30 am]
[music |Akercocke - My Apterous Angel]

According to last.fm my overall top track is 'The Grand Conjuration' by (well, duh) Opeth at 128 times. TGC goes for 10 minutes and 21 seconds, which equates to a total of approximately 22 hours. That's not including the times when I listen to it without my computer!

I've also spent about 17 hours listening to Harlequin Forest, and 11 hours listening to Beneath the Mire.

The next non-Opeth track is by 'Death Denied' by Lumbricus. Got narcissist? Anyways - that would 73 times so far with a track length of 3:56 and therefore a bit less than 5 hours.

'Eight' by Karma to Burn is the next non-Lumbricus (and non-Opeth) track, clocking in at 4.65 hours.

Oarsome source.

Jeeeeez. [May. 12th, 2007|01:40 am]
[music |Madder Mortem - 07 - Silverspine - Madder Mortem]

There are two things that I can think of at the moment that get me frustrated to the point of dizziness. The first, almost obviously and stereotypically, is love. Enough said about that.

The second is when someone insults metal, saying you don't listen to to it because it's unoriginal and same-ish. Firstly, before you insult something, do your research. Have a listen to Meshuggah, Cynic, Madder Mortem or Ne Obliviscaris. Try to find bands like them. You may hate their sound but, goddamnit, you'll have a tough time finding bands that created music like them before their creation.

Secondly, metal isn't always entirely about originality. Often is exists purely for factors such as power, raw energy, brutality; and doing it good. Bands like Bloodbath and Testament. They build their sound on foundations set by bands such as Entombed, Morbid Angel, Sepultura and Metallica. You can find the sound vile and putrid and I woudln't care. You may not 'get' screaming and growling. You may not be able to find cohesion in the musicianship. You have a right to personal taste, whatever - just don't rag on metal based on retarded assumptions. Grow up.
